The Move Down To Lands End Sun 1 June

The team met at Marks house. Fortunately the support vehicle had been loaded and packed the evening before, The time was 0810 hrs and an air of excitement filled the air. Joanne and the kids dropped Jonathan off, Olivia dropped Alistair and Tony’s mum and dad dropped the Big T off. The team was now assembled. After last minute packing we departed and got as far as Mother’s house. Tea, toast and final goodbyes. We were now finally off. After a brief stop for fuel we got onto the road. The move down to Land’s End had actually started. Ray [The Team support driver] won the quote of the day with, ‘Thank God for Viagra!’ – please don’t ask. The trip down was amusing, Alistair nursing his shoulder strain even resorting to acupuncture in the car park of a service station! Then delivered a live phone interview with Dune FM as we motored along the M5.

By 1720 hrs we arrived at St Just YHA and after booking in we set about assembling the bike. 2 and a half hours later the bike was constructed and we went for a spin only to bump into several other end 2 enders at the hostel. One family had lost their daughter to cancer last year have raised £50k. The team comprises of serving and ex-service Army fellas. They will be setting off on the same day tomorrow and will hopefully complete the task on the 12 June. Another couple riding on a JD Cycles tandem finished their end2end after 2 weeks. They seemed elated and no sooner had arrived were out to celebrate at the local pub.

With the bike sorted we went to find St Ruth’s delights and at 2110 hrs no pub would now serve us food, chips and curried sauce was the order of the day. Finally, the Wellington Hotel (Pub) was the Cornish setting for a couple of pints before returning back to the hostel.

So, the trip has actually started. We are all very excited and yet apprehensive that the bike with its laden panniers will perform as expected. Tomorrow we set off on what we hope will be a UK First. 2350 hrs lights out. JC
